Mac, you can finish out your GP any way you wish. In fact, you don't have to apply any finish at all. I never did 'til these laminated jobs came along.
On them, I coat with epoxy, then rub it all off with a rag right quick, before it sets up. This leaves a waterproof finish that looks and feels a lot like oil. On my latest paddle, that fancy-dan thing I made a web page for, I fiberglassed the last 15" or so of each blade primarily as an experiment. John Caldeira does this on his GPs (at least, the edges), so I thought I'd give it a go. So far, it really toughens 'em up, I'll tell ya. But it's still too soon to know whether it will become my standard procedure or not. It certainly is with John, though.
