Just thought I'd enter a horror story to this discussion. Some years ago a friend borrowed my Old Town canoe and attached it to his car top with those cheapo foam blocks and inadequate bow and stern lines (I think he used cotton clothes line). The bow line snapped while at freeway speed. The stern line held long enough to accentuate the slam down to the pavement. He DID bring the larger pieces back to me; it wasn't pretty.
