White Stripe between dark

I wish to paint a white stripe about three inches wide on the side of the hull to separate two darker colors, red and blue.

I believe I should paint a white stripe a little wider that three inches completing that stripe with as many coats as required.

After completing the white stripe I should mask off its edges and paint the darker colors on either side.

Is that appropriate?

BTW, I'm sitting here putting my 17LT, which should have shipped today, together in my mind. It is not hard to sand out mistakes in your mind.
