I don't know much about painting either, but my gut says to treat it like the line between varnish and paint. Following the CLC directions, here is how I did it on my son's boat.
1. Score a line where the transition is going to take place. For me it was between the paint and varnish on the deck. I used the utility knife with light pressure and it seemed to work ok.
2. Pick one finish to start with it and apply all coats. It took quite a few coats of paint.
3. Let the paint dry for a while (it is very soft for the first couple of days.)
4. Mask the newly painted area and apply the next finish.
The instructions that come with the kit are a lot more clear.
