Chesapeake 17 Keel Joint

First build. Should I take the time to bevel the keel joint before stitching?

RE: Chesapeake 17 Keel Joint

Hi PNWCoast,

if its a first build, i would tend to stick with the instructions.   so if it suggests a bevel, then go ahead with that.

on the bevel, it is important that you ensure you have your panel orientation all organized.  facing forward, which panel are you designating left side and right side?....and simultaneously, which side is the inside of the boat and which side is the outside of the boat.  once you start beveling, ensure you are following your orientation scheme as this all gets locked in.

if you get it disorganzied you can find yourself with bevels on the wrong side/wrong angles.  (don't ask me why this point sticks in my mind so strongle after many years :)  )

the beveling, given above, is pretty straight forward....just remember to keep your orientation all organized as you do this.

if you don't bevel, you will have more epoxy work to fill in all the gaps that will get created.  so i am a fan of beveling first to minimize this if that is what the instruction calls for.

hope this is helpful
