Mac McCarthy in "Featherweight Boat Building", a description of how to build the strp version of the Wee Lassie, uses a piece of bamboo attached by light line, in this case it would be anchored to the rear bulkhead. Infinately adjustable. Crude but very functional. Good thing about it being in a kayak is that it is not seen. I'll be using this for my 2 canoes. Good Luck!
