it's intersting how much 2oz cloth is used on the Arctic Hawk kit. You're right about deck strength issues,,the deck glass is primarily for preventing waterstaining dings especially cut end grain at the sheer where little dings can open up the sponge like interior veneer end grain. When I built a NorthBay I chucked the whole under deck carlins business (in kayaks?) and glassed the underside behind the cockpit for 16" with two layers of 4oz glass with a recessed hatch providing the rest of the strength. If a panel of ply needs strength then start with glass on both sides,,like the cockpit has glass on both sides of the bottom. 4oz definately contributes to the foredecks ability to handle a kayak getting dumped across it but so would underdeck glass. It's the dings the 4oz deck glass is there for.
