ray,
i would strongly recommend glassing the deck. i would, however, use two ounce cloth.
the main things that this will get you are 1) vastly improved resistance to paddle dings and other typical impacts that a deck sustains, 2) superior protection from water damage to the hull and 3) a bit better strength for rear re-entrys...even though my view on this third item is that more substantial and specific reinforcement is needed than deck glass for this particular concern.
with respect to rear re-reentries, a couple layers of four ounce cloth underneath the deck immediately to the rear of the cocpit opening is a more robust solution to strenght in this area for soembody contemplating heavy duty deck compressions in this area.
anyway, the 2oz glass wets out and fills easily and does not require much effort relative to the benefits so i would go ahead and glass your deck...the weight penalty is fairly minimal with 2oz cloth as well..
