Yours is the first report that I have heard of machine failure while sewing a Sailrite kit. I have used my el-cheapo machine on Sunbrella several times without problems, and have never had a problem winding or breaking the bobbin (have always used V-69 thread which I believe is what Sailrite uses on small sails). I did however trash a gear sewing a much lighter fabric, but I think that was due to a loose thread end being dragged down into the machine.
