We also have a 2000 Subaru Forester. It gets about 25 mpg (automatic) and is very stable, even with two boats on the roof in a crosswind. I particularly like the very rugged factory rack which (in the 2000 model) has small openings at each end of the rack rails that are bolted to the roof. We use these openings for extra safety lines over the boats, in case the main straps or rack towers should fail. Much better and less hassle than bow/stern lines to the bumpers.

We just drove it home through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in a very icy/slushy snowstorm, and it was great in that weather. Ditto for rain also.

I personnaly think Toyotas and Hondas are a bit more reliable, but the Subaru is one safe car to drive with kayaks on the roof.
