Subaru seems to be the choice where I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. On a recent club outing, there were 5 Subaru Foresters with kayaks on top, mine included. It is a nice roomy car but no monster, and as others have pointed out, it is economical to drive. The all-wheel drive is nice for my other sport, cross-country skiing.
