I, too, had not used a plane except once in shop class. I looked forward to that stage of the boatbuilding that would let me master the plane, making beautiful wood curls. On my second stroke, my hand slipped off the plane and the raw fibergalss edge of the hull tore up my thumb. I bandaged my thumb, retired the plane and picked up my hand held belt sander. I know it doesn't have the romance of the old wood working tools, but it has been effective. I wore out my old Craftsman and replaced it with a very smooth Ryobi model. I completed my Chesapeake double with it and am in the midst of building two WR18's. I have experimented with different grades of sandpaper and have found the tool to be very efficient and the results excellent.
