Hatch gasket alternative?

I have followed the instructions to the letter in making my flush hatches for the SH 16 and yesterday intalled the weather-stripping gaskets provided. Problem is the gasket sits on top of the hatch rim. Is it supposed to tuck between the rims and the hatch opening...that would allow the hatch to return to its flush position...as is it is impossible to get the hatch lid flush cause' the gasket keeps it up...proud of the deck. I need a skinnier gasket alternative or something??? Anybody catch my drift?
