Rod Holder

Posted by Pete Staehling on Oct 28, 2005

Hi Folks,

I haven't been around here for a while, but could use some advice.

I am going to mount a rod holder on my Chesapeake 17 so I can more conveniently fish from it. I have the Berkley rod holder showh at: http://www.berkley-fishing.com/products/images/Accessories/QSRH-1H.jpg

I don't mind drilling the holes in the boat and having the mounting hardware permanently installed, but I don't want to screw up and wind up with it in the wrong place!

Where is the best place to mount it so that it is convenient, but out of the way for paddling? I was thinking of the foredeck but am not sure how much it will get in the way of paddling with a 7' spinning rod mounted. How far forward works best? How do you angle the rod so that both rod and line are out of the paddles way while trolling?

I also considered mounting the flush tube type holders behind me angled forward so I can see the rod tip. Seems like they would be out of the way of paddling, but definitely in the way of rolling when a rod was mounted. I am willing to assume that I will be unable to roll while rigged for fishing though.

Any thoughts or advice?

Pete
