Ah, Wet Sanding

Posted by Mac on Oct 5, 2005

It's more Zen than other forms of sanding.

Don't use anything coarser than 400grit wet/dry paper. I use an automotive hard rubber sanding block, a bucket of tepid water, FM station set to classical music (very quiet), phone unplugged etc.

Use VERY light pressure - almost just the weight of the block.

You'll hear a different sound as the paper sands into the varnish during the primary pass vs the return stroke. There will also be more drag initially. The sound, and the drag will very quickly stabilize to being equal between forward and back - then you're done - move on to a new area.

I find it useful to keep the paper very well rinsed with clear water, and to use the fingertips of my free hand to compare the area I've just sanded to the area I'm approaching.

Of all sanding, I love this part best.

Enjoy!
