deck installation
Posted by Frank R on Jul 20, 2005
The instructions for installation of the deck on CLC kayaks indicate that you should have someone help hold the deck down as you nail, but after test bending the deck over the frame I came to the conclusion it would be very hard to get the deck consistently tight to the shear even with 2 or three helpers. So I cut the deck pieces with a very generous overhang, approx 1-1/2 inches each side, purchased 6 cheap ratchet straps, wrapped them around the deck and hull, slapped on the thickened epoxy and ratcheted the deck down, and then nailed per the instructions. It worked great and also helped with the problem of the forward most part of the front deck wanting to pop into reverse camber as the material was bent to mate with the deck beam and shear clamps.
