buffing out varnish

Posted by James Eager on Jun 16, 2005

So I am finally putting the varnish on. I have been using the roller and foam brush method describe by some folks earlier on this forum...adding a splash of penetrol to the varnish, rolling it on and tipping out the bubbles with a foam brush. I have tio say it really works well. You can get level coat on in no time. My question is, does anyone do anything to the last coat in the way of buffing?...I finished a guitar a while back and used a rubbing compound to smooth out the last coat of nitrocellulose. My varnish is going on pretty flat but there are tiny little craters or pock marks...I dont know if I care really cause I plan on putting it in the water real soon regardless. Just curious.
