I agree with Mac and John on varnishing in cooler temps. Penetrol is the secret to my "success" on my boats. It has no adverse affect on paint or varnish. It does help significantly if you have to varnish in warmer temps. As far as technique, roll and tip helps because you get the varnish on the boat quicker. Then you have a little more time when tipping to correct any mistakes. Direction makes no difference when rolling it on, just make it in small enough sections to take your time tipping. Always tip toward and into the last section to eliminate marks where you start your brush stroke. I hope this helps, I'm much better at doing it than explaining how to.
