Also consider somewhat aggressive JPEG compression unless you really have to have the highest quality image possible. For illustrating technical notes, you can easily get by with the 25 - 50% image quality setting on most image editors. It makes an enormous difference in download time.
Cropping images to show just the "interesting" part also helps. An 8x10 image requires 4 times the bandwidth of a 4x5.
