Problem is you are using masking tape. For the sheer C clamps you have to switch to duct tape, because it sticks to rust. Duct tape is also more water-resistant than masking tape, eliminating the need to re-apply a small handful of bacon fat each trip.

You don't have to be as fussy as I was with the compass, getting the tape exactly perfect. I just do that for show.
