Jeff,

Sharpening stones are very hard and very brittle. Is it possible that you had a little drip of epoxy on the plastic clamps on your workmate? Have you ever seen a flint knapper chip off a piece of flint with a deer antler on TV? A drip or high spot of epoxy can do the same thing if it's placed right, this may be what happened to your stone.
