I don't know if the clamping caused the problem you experienced, but the above responses sound reasonable.

For future use: Don't ever clamp the waterstone. Set the waterstone against a strip of wood attached to the workbench or to a stout piece of plywood. As you press the iron or chisel forward, it drives the stone up against the strip of wood, so the stone doesn't move. Use plastic to help keep bench or plywood dry.
