I'm familiar with the Saratoga Springs area, about 20 miles south of L. George. I don't recall the BFs being as bad there as farther north.

Besides deet, we carry those cheap little bug nets that go over your head. Handy if you're paddling on a narrow, shadier stream or cove, where the little monsters love to lurk. Keeps them out of your mouth/nose/eyes/ears when you're moving faster. They also seem to be worse at dusk.

My cat likes to eat them, but not fast enough.
