Re: Fineline tape and pai

I've had occassional problems with fineline lifting the finish. I now only use it over bare epoxy, to mask off the deck for the paint. When I later varnish, I use the 3M slow release (or is it safe release, can't remember). I use a clean (no fuzzies) roll and run the tape along the paint edge carefully, then go over the edge with a wallpaper roller to really flatten it. Then I varnish and get a line that's good enough for me. I've never had a lifted finish with this technique, even on one day old paint.

I actually called 3M a few years ago to complain about the fineline, and they warned that it is not designed for long application (more than 24 hours) over paint. They also said heat, sunlight and uncured paint can be a problems also.
