Re: new car plans

Speaking of Suburbans, I have an 87 Suburban, (I'd get a new vehicle, but I spend all my money on kayaks and kayak gear). It came with a flimsey factory rack that I don't have much faith in, It's connected at 3 locations per side with 2 spreader screws per connection into the sheet metal of the roof, so 6 screws per side. The rails are small aluminum tracks. The whole system I can easily rock with one hand and I just don't trust it. The problem is, The rack suppliers have racks for vans that attach to the gutter rails, but I only have gutter rails about the doors. Even Thule only goes back to a 92 Suburban, and a lot of the kayak racks out there attach to your existing rack. Any suggestions? I was thinking of a custom made welded job but not quite sure how to design it. I would like to carry up to 4 kayaks at a time if possible, a minimum of 3.
