Baldown,

From my experience, the glass needs a smooth and even bed. Firstly the hull has to have nothing upon which the cloth can snag while you smooth it out - take your time with this step - overnight if necessary, and secondly the glass will follow gentle undulations but will allow air to build up beside sharper edges (see the posts regarding onlays). So if you have ridges the same height as veneer - say 1/32 of an inch -with sharp edges you may invite bubbles.

The fiberglass cloth can't be considered a fairing compound in that it will simply follow the shape over which it is applied. When you are sanding later on, and there are humps and valleys, the sander will cut through the epoxy coats and into the glass on the bumps.

My 2 cents would be to take the time now to get your hull as smooth as you can - try 3 x 8 inch plywood with 80 grit pandpaper glued to it to use as a fairing board - this tends to get the high spots a little better than a ROS.

Remember the mantra - sanding is fun..........

Best
