Re: Skerry sail plan

Dan, The sailplan of a boat is matched to a hull. From my conversations with John Harris at CLC, the idea behind the Skerry was a small, easily stowed rig. From my experience with sailing the Skerry, the small sail works just fine, and the hull is easily driven.

I've been through the experience of getting a larger sail designed for a boat that I owned. I paid for the services of a good sailmaker who did a nice job. The end result was a boat that sailed a little faster than the original rig, but I always had the nagging fear of exceeding the mounting in the boat. I cringed with every little crack or groan and was always fearful of pushing the boat too much. A marconi style rig is somewhat higher than a sprit in order to gain square footage. That means that a boat like a Skerry becomes even more "tippy" than it would be right now. Phil Bolger has a book out on small boat rigs. Go to Harold Payson's website: http://www.instantboats.com/books.htm and do some reading first.

Nuff Said.

Happy sailing!
