Dave, The planing of the shear clamps depends on the curvature of the deck. I'm working on a Chesapeake 18, which has a fair amount of camber and there is a slight cutting into the edge of the plywood. The idea behind the planing guides is to help you cut a rolling bevel (not an easy feat). It sounds like you are doing the right thing, just remember the old adage "cut and look". Plane just a little and keep checking with the planing guide. I know it's tempting to rush this step, but take your time. You'll get it right. Send me some photos when you get her built!
