# Coats of Poly Paint

Posted by Mac on Apr 23, 2004

Morning Folks

Need opinions on the number of coats of 2 part epoxy paint I need to apply to my kayak's hull.

From what I can see from the 2 part poly primer, and my first coat of midnight blue, this stuff covers like crazy. It took me close to three hours to wet sand about 50% of the primer off - I was intending to sand off more but when things got real fair and smooth I quit. The first coat of blue totally covered the white primer with no runs or sags, and has dried overnight to a smooth finish. I intend to do a rather light wet sanding, rinse and tack before applying a second coat (hopefully with the same non sagging results!) The poly paint cures like epoxy resin and stays as thick as it was when applied. Regular paint has to be built up in layers - as most of it evaporates while drying.

My question now is - if this second coat looks good, can I stop? (I usually overdo it, and the extra step, coat, sanding pass etc always gets me in trouble).

Would really appreciate your opinions....

Thanks
