Mac and Kyle seem to be at odds here. I say they're both right. The pits will remain if you leave 'em and varnish, but it would take a nose-to-the-wood inspection to detect 'em. And I believe you may legally beat up anyone who examines your work that closely.
I vote: to heck with it, varnish and go paddling... and repeat after me... "we're not building furniture here..."
