alternative Plywood for SUP

Hi

Over here in NZ I haven't found a supplier for marine okoume plywood, but I have found

Euro Gaboon BS1088 Marine Plywood http://bbstimbers.co.nz/downloads/Gaboon_Marine_Plywood.pdf)

and

Meranti BS1088 Plywood (http://bbstimbers.co.nz/downloads/meranti_marine.pdf)

With the Gaboon one being a lightweight boat building plywood.

Does the forum have a recommendation before I invest - I'm also struggling to find 3mm but both the above are available in 4mm.

Thanks

RE: alternative Plywood for SUP

ignore the main question - upon further investigation Gaboon and okoume are the same thing.. Now just need to find some 3mm in New Zealand.

RE: alternative Plywood for SUP

I built a Ches17 with Meranti. Slightly heavier but a very nice timber. i used Gaboon for a Kaholo and a Pax20. Lighter but a bit bland compared to the meranti

RE: alternative Plywood for SUP

I have been unable to track down the recommended 3mm ply - if entire 12-6 SUP built from 4mm I'm reasonable sure addition weight would be minimal. Or would the following also be usable

3mm Hoop pine

Any suggestions?

RE: alternative Plywood for SUP

I suspect that you might have probs with the hull using 4mm. The 3mm Hoop will work. It's bland and heavier/denser than gaboon. Hoop hull with contrasting timber for deck would look good and you can always paint the hull.

Some of my Mates are currently skinning timber surfboards with 3mm hoop.
