Newer cars maybe differnt, but the old Volvo rack was screwed into rubber grommets in the roof. The Thule gutter mounts were good for 80" between the bars and I trusted these more than the factory rack. Unfortunatly the CRV with Thule racks only gives me 27" (no factory rack) between bars. A jury rigged bracket going to the factory rack bolts might stretch that to 60", but that requires modification of the seal, Hmmmm. I'd be interested to hear how Vacu-Rak does. RogerJ
