When I had some old epoxy go stiff, I threw it out, but this is an interesting question,

I suppose the downside of heating up the epoxy would be the shortened pot time and the increased likelihood of it 'kicking' on you. Also it will cool down as you spread it, unless the kayak is also hot.

Perhaps you could thin it? According to the WEST manual (see link), you can thin epoxy with acetone, toluene or MEK, but it will weaken it slightly. That should not be a problem it you're doing fill coats. If you're not doing fill coats, perhaps it's time to buy some more epoxy.
