Back to hatches

In a couple of sites dealing with hatches the builder mixes graphite with the epoxy/glass forming the lip. Anyone know of a particular reason for this? It sure makes the area stand out in the photos but does it help the gasket seal or release or what? Building up six layers of six oz. glass, why not a layer of carbon fiber between three or four layers of glass might increase stiffness. Thoughts anyone? RogerJ
