hiding footbrace bolts

I'm sure this is an old question but I search on foot and footbraces yielded every message in the forum as a hit. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong with the search tool. Anyone have a sugestion on how not to drill through the side of the kayak to install footbraces? I think there have been books written on this, but you folks rock and I know you will guide me right. Dames
