Bill,

I have a 2004 Toyota Highlander and carry two Chesapeakes on top. I use two kayak pads on each bar (standard carrying rack) and then strap them well. In the front I use a 2 ft. piece of 1/2 line wrapped twice around a bumper support in the center of the bumper (I often leave this attached). I then tie each bow line to this loop. It works for me. I usually don't bother with stern lines but someone was indicating that this was probably a bad idea. I'm not sure why as they seem quite stable.
