That's right, no varnish on the pirogue. The rocks, oysters, branches, concrete boat ramps, sand, etc. do enough damage every year that I have to sand out the scratches and re-epoxy anyway. I figure varnish is for furniture and boats that are stored outside. Boats that get a lot of use should have their finish considered as expendable protection, sort of like space capsule heatshields.
