Keeping Feet Dry

Posted by Mac on Nov 11, 2004

Peter,

First of all, please note LeeL's input - I was hoping he would weigh in on this - lots of salt water experience on safety and such.

My neoprene boots are 19" high and tight around the calf. (Also check out SealSkinz). I just leave my jeans bunched up at my knees. (Told ya it wasn't pretty).

Being old and stiff, I use the straddle and plop method of entry in about 12" of water. I usually also manage to exit in reverse without my pants getting wet (again I'm Mr. Flatwater - doubt this would work in surf or waves over 6").

I've been thinking of wool long johns with nylon rain pants (jogging) instead of jeans. The wool would be better in immersion and if the nylon gets a little wet - no biggie.

I'll try this tomorrow in temps expected to be 26F, and I 'll let you know.

I may purchase a neoprene balaklava today in case it gets windy tomorrow. I think the Lee's will approve, as head and hand warmth is paramount for both comfort and recovery. As an interim step ie: between summer and artic conditions, I wonder if a wool ski type balaklava would suffice?

(Great, Peter, now we're BOTH asking questions!)
