Stitching holes Sassafras

I'm about to drill holes for the Sassafras 12 to begin to stitch the planks together. The assembly manual says 1/16th inch holes, 1/4 inch from the edge 6 inches apart. The Canoe Shop book re: the Sassafras canoes says 1/16th inch holes 1/2 inch from the edge. CLC is closed and I'd like to assemble this afternoon. Anyone know which is right or if it matters, or maybe I should split the difference and do 3/8 inch from the edge?
