Yep, my only point about the low freeboard is that flotation can't raise the level above that of a dry hull, so IMHO more flotation might only yield a couple of inches extra.
My test was just a "feasibility test" for my own benefit, and I'd certainly make no claim to have discovered that the boat is "easily recoverable" in a true emergency, especially with high chop, winds etc.
I guess bottom line is there's no substitute for experimentation and reports of actual experience. Lacking that, extra flotation certainly can't hurt and certainly should contribute something to overall safety.
Assuming one wants extra float, next question is how to accomplish this for a Wherry? Foam under thwarts is one possibility I suppose ...
