Re: PAX 18 for Touring

I did away with the rear king plank in total, seemed like a pretty element that contributed a lot of unecessary weight.

The rear deck is reinforced behind the cockpit for paddle float reentries and the skeg box and extra bulkheads support the rest of the flat rear deck.

This arrangement has held up well and is one of the advantages of building from plans (modifying is often limited if there are precut pieces such as in the kits).

Freeboard? What freeboard? I am only 130 and it takes only a slight lean to have water on the rear deck. The front deck's tight radius helps spill a lot of the chop. However, all things considered, as long as you are under way at 5-6 mph the pax18 is a fairly dry ride, even in 6-12" chop and 1-2' wind driven waves or wakes. It has to be pretty rough before I need the spray skirt on warm summer days.
