Paintin' the hull

I plan on beginning to paint the hull of my LT17 soon, but haven't found what I would consider a comfortable amount of directions about how to do so. If I am using a high build primer, do I need to spend the same amount of time sanding the hull as I would if I were varnishing it? Is it necessary to sand with the 220 grit on the hull? Which should happen first, painting the hull or varnishing the deck? Are there any guidelines for masking/taping the deck so that it looks as good as the boats in the catalogue?

A little guidance would go a long way with me right now.
