Nope, no expert here. Just a builder with some prior experience. I like sponge "brushes", and I recommend you also buy a foam roller. I roll on a coat and then "tip", or use a brush to smooth out the bubbles. Stick to Interlux (more money, but worth it). Brightsides is a pain to apply, but does hold up fairly well in salt water. As far as marine varnish goes either Interlux or Z-spar work well. Someone else on this board said to use a "wet edge", which means to use a little thinner in the varnish so as to retard the drying (makes the application easier) and I agree. I also use wet or dry sandpaper and wet sand in between coats. Happy building!
