Varnishing tricks?

Thanks Paddler - and others - for the kind words. It sure feels good to build 'a ship' all by yourself - but it adds considerably to the joy that others can appreciate the result as well!

The nice (and admittedly frustrating) thing about (hand) varnishing is that it always comes out differently. So, you can spend your entire life trying to obtain that perfect finish... Having varnished on and off for almost 40 years, I certainly have still not obtained it (which is probably a good thing, since I don't want my boats to look like they were made in a factory).

As for varnishing tricks, I don't think I can say anything that hasn't been said before. - One observation though: surface preparation is easy (if you spend enough time), but varnishing is difficult. So, if you (like me) is not a master painter, spend the time in preparing the surface (yep, read 'sanding') - and then thin the varnish until you can keep that all important 'wet edge'. -- Niels
