Shock Cords - Artic Style

In the process of refinishing my Northbay and am thinking of of redesigning the shock cords to avoid the large ugly knots. I've admired the elegance of the layout on the Artic Hawk but haven't looked into the technical side. I assume there are small holes in the deck just short of the shear clamp and the cord is knotted underneath. How watertight is this system and does it function well? I would appreciate any feedback and recommendations. Thank you.
