I never heard that one either. Yes, some buff the varnish to make it smoother and have a more furniture like gloss/finish but heck its a boat and I have very good luck with my varnish jobs. Its going to be bashed and nicked and damaged anyway through use so I say save the buffing for your coffee table.
Terry is right about curing in the sun. Oil based finishes like varnish do harden up with some heat (ie sun) and then a cooling off. Several cycles will do the job nicely. If you find your paint taking a long time to get hard then try a day in the sun.
