stainless vs bronze

Posted by Brian T. Cunningham on Apr 26, 2004

There's two things going on. 1) there's a chemical reaction between wood and metal. Bronze minimizes this to an extent.

2) below the waterline stainless is deprived of oxygen, so it will actually erode. I've seen some stainless fastners pulled out of old boats, might as well have been iron!

For the most part we are building daysailers, which won't be sitting at a mooring. If your building say a sharpie that will sit at a mooring, then use silica bronze, a specific type of bronze, below the waterline throughout if you can afford it, and stainless elsewhere.
