Another option is to not use the deck beam at all. I just completed two tandems without deck beams. I did add a couple of strips similar to CLC's hatch strengtheners for additional deck strength after the build was complete. I'm very happy with the strength of the end result.

To accomplish the build I cut additional temporary bulkheads and taped them into the area where the deck beam would have gone. These forms were coated on the edges with packing tape so that no epoxy would stick to them. They gave the deck the support needed for bending the deck around but were removed after all the epoxy cured.

Lighter too.
