Mystic River Canoe Kit - finishes on non-fiberglass parts

Hi all, first-time boat builder here. The instructions indicate that if a kit is purchased, the gunwales do not need to be fiberglassed. How about the thwart? Do the gunwales and thwart only need to be varnished at the very end?

I'm also curious if the unfinished ash seats require any sort of finish or treatment to maintain a good lifespan.

Thank you!

most of these pieces, though they are not glassed, would get painted first with epoxy.  you would then lightly sand it and then apply varnish.

the epoxy would ensue a waterproof layer under the varnish.

I would agree with epoxing first and then varnishing. The peace pole I made from 4x4 lumber suffered from rain damage even with several coats of marine varnish on them. When I refinised, I epoxied (no fiberglass) first and then re-varnished and it's lasted years without water damage.
