Guillemot L Bow and Stern forms

So, i'm kinda new at this so bear with me.

I've got everything put together with the exeption of two pieces.  took me awhile to figure out kind of how to use them.  The plans I ordered weeks after getting the forms together confirm my suspisions.  however, I still don't quite understand how they attach to the forms.  If I bevel them and place them on the forms as is then I'll end up with an elevation much higher than the last form before the bow and stern.  If looking at the plans, it appears that I need to trim off part of the forms for these to fit as they are an exactly shape of the forms.  If that were the case i'd have expected that part of the forms to be missing.  so I'm a bit confused at the moment on how they are to be attached.

RE: Guillemot L Bow and Stern forms

Hi

this is h....and i have a couple strip builts under my belt....so welcome.

you are asking a good question and when i did this the first time....i had some of the same challenges/questions you are asking.  but a picture's worth a thousand words and nick has recently put up some video that i think speaks directly to your question.   on nick's site he has a particular video that i think will help you sort out this step:

https://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guillemot/blog/admin/making_petrel_play_making_inner_stems_and_installing_first_strips_episode_3

while it is not a guilemot in the video...i think you will find it very easy to translate to your situation and i am confident, having built a number of his designs, that the same general principles apply.

after you look at it, let us know if that answered your question.

RE: Guillemot L Bow and Stern forms

So I did watch that video multiple times.  that's kinda what prompted the question.

the form he is using has already been cut out for the inner stem.  he will bevel the form then place the inner stem on it.  Mine is n ot notched already as you can see in the third photo.  So the question is do I need to cut out that part or am I missing something on how this fits together.

RE: Guillemot L Bow and Stern forms

ok, i think i understand the question.

often times if you order the forms (i.e, they are computer cut).  the bow and stern form will be inclusive of the inner stem/stern and they will also cut out for you the inner stems seperately (so essentially you have two sets of inner stems/sterns)

so if that is the case, you need to cut the inner stems off of the bow and stern forms (so you can properly fit inner stems that you are going to construct out of wood that will become part of the boat).

if you lay the bow and stern forms over the plans, you will see quickly if they are inclusive of the inners stems.  or another way to put it, the form plus the inner stem should equal the outline on the plan.

RE: Guillemot L Bow and Stern forms

that is what it looked like when I was trying to figure this out.  I haven't compared to the plans but will do so later in the day.

Now to find a band saw.
